3 interesting and uncrowded streets in Gdańsk

19.08.2025

Gdańsk has been captivating with its architecture, history, and atmosphere for centuries, but it also attracts crowds of tourists from all over the world. The most famous streets, such as Długi Targ and Długie Pobrzeże, can be really crowded during the season. Fortunately, the city also hides many quieter corners that are equally impressive and allow you to enjoy a walk in a more intimate atmosphere. Today, we take you to three exceptional streets – Ogarna, św. Ducha, and Szafarnia – which are worth visiting during your stay in Gdańsk and which you will find right next to Marina Club Hotel.

Ogarna Street – historic atmosphere off the beaten path

Ogarna Street runs parallel to Długi Targ and is over half a kilometer long. It is one of the oldest arteries of the Main City, with a history dating back to the Middle Ages. At number 95, in a townhouse, on May 24, 1686, the world-renowned creator of the temperature scale and inventor of the mercury thermometer – Daniel Fahrenheit – was born. Although the buildings were largely destroyed during World War II, today you can admire beautifully restored townhouses that remind us of the former glory of this place.

Walking along Ogarna, you can easily feel the calmer rhythm of the city. There are not as many tourists as on Długi Targ, so you can admire the architecture without rush, peek into small art galleries, or stop at one of the cafes hidden between the facades. It is also a great place for photos – colorful townhouses, cobblestone sidewalks, and the lack of crowds make every shot especially charming.

Św. Ducha Street – art, history, and everyday life

Another street worth visiting is św. Ducha Street. This is a unique place where history meets modernity. Its beginning is right next to the Jan III Sobieski monument, which connects Targ Węglowy and Drzewny, and the whole street runs perpendicular to the Motława, ending at the footbridge leading to Ołowianka Island.

Św. Ducha delights with a local atmosphere; the street itself is much quieter than the main promenades. The townhouses hide art galleries, small craft workshops, and cozy restaurants and cafes visited both by locals and those seeking less touristy places. It’s worth stopping here for a moment to see exhibitions by local artists or simply sit on a bench and feel the rhythm of everyday life in Gdańsk.

Interestingly, św. Ducha Street leads directly to one of the modern attractions – the rotating footbridge that connects the quay with Granary Island. It is a great spot from which you can quickly return to Marina Club Hotel***.

Szafarnia Street – elegance by the Motława

The third suggestion is Szafarnia Street – well known to guests of Marina Club Hotel***, as our hotel is located here at number 10. Szafarnia is an extraordinary blend of former port character and modern elegance. Just decades ago, the street was mainly associated with business and industrial activity. Today, it is one of the most prestigious locations in Gdańsk, full of apartment buildings, restaurants, and hotels with views of the Motława River.

Walking along Szafarnia, you can admire the impressive panorama of the quay on the opposite side of the river – with the majestic Crane, granary-style townhouses, and modern buildings that fit perfectly into the historic landscape. It is also an ideal place for a romantic evening stroll, when the city lights reflect on the water, creating an unforgettable scenery.

Szafarnia is also a great starting point for further sightseeing – just a few minutes’ walk separates it from Długa Street, St. Mary’s Basilica, or Ołowianka Island. And after an eventful walk, Marina Club Hotel*** awaits you with comfortable conditions to rest.

Why visit the lesser-known streets of Gdańsk?

Choosing quieter streets like Ogarną, św. Ducha, or Szafarnia gives you a completely different perspective of Gdańsk. These are not only places full of history but also spaces where you can feel the authentic spirit of the city. Away from the crowds, it’s easier to strike up conversations with locals, discover local cafes and galleries, and enjoy an atmosphere you won’t find in guides.

For guests of Marina Club Hotel***, this is an additional advantage – all these streets are located in the immediate vicinity of the hotel, so just a few steps are enough to transport yourself to the extraordinary world of Gdańsk’s hidden corners.

Although Gdańsk is primarily associated with Długi Targ and the Motława River, it is worth stepping off the main routes to find more intimate places. Ogarną Street will enchant you with the atmosphere of times past, św. Ducha Street lets you feel the artistic soul of the city, and Szafarnia combines elegance and modernity with a port character. Three different stories, three different moods – all within a short walk from Marina Club Hotel***.
