Fountain of Neptune
One of the most iconic monuments of Gdańsk is the Neptune Fountain. It is located on Long Market, in the heart of historic Gdańsk, just in front of the entrance to the Artus Court. This is a place that every tourist should see when in Gdańsk, and guests of the Marina Club hotel have a particularly close distance to it.
History of the Neptune Fountain
The Neptune Fountain was created at the initiative of Mayor Bartłomiej Schachmann and the then Voivode Jakub Wejher. Its construction began in 1606 and was completed in 1633. The fountain was designed by Abraham van den Blocke, a sculptor of Flemish origin who collaborated with several other artists on this work.
Neptune, the Roman god of the seas, symbolizes Gdańsk's maritime traditions and its significance as a trading port. In the 17th century, Gdańsk was one of the most important ports in Europe, and the Neptune Fountain was a reflection of this. Many legends circulate around the fountain, one of them says that the water from the fountain turned into vodka when the residents threw gold coins into it.
The fountain has been renovated several times. The largest renovation works took place after World War II when Gdańsk suffered significant damage. The last major renovation took place in 2011-2012 when the fountain regained its original splendor and shine.
