Crane
Staying at our Marina Club Hotel, located just a few steps from the historic center of Gdańsk, gives you a unique opportunity to discover one of the most characteristic symbols of the city – The Gdańsk Crane. This impressive port crane, situated by the Motława River, is not only a monument but also a testament to the rich history of Gdańsk as an important trading and maritime center.
The Crane – what is behind this name?
The Crane owes its name to the long, movable arm that resembles the neck of a crane. It was this arm that made it possible to lift heavy loads from the decks of ships and transfer them to the wharf. The crane was an indispensable element of Gdańsk’s port, signifying its importance in medieval Europe.
The History of the Crane
The construction of the Crane began in the mid-14th century. For centuries, it served as the main port crane of Gdańsk, facilitating the loading and unloading of goods. Its enormous size and impressive structure impressed all who saw it.
In the 19th century, with the development of new technologies, the Crane lost its original significance. For many years it fell into disrepair until a decision was made to rebuild it. Today, the Crane is one of the most recognized symbols of Gdańsk and a significant tourist attraction.
What to see at the Crane?
- Crane Museum: Inside the Crane, there is a branch of the National Maritime Museum, which presents the history of this extraordinary structure. Here, you will see original crane mechanisms, tools used by port workers, and exhibitions dedicated to the history of navigation and trade in Gdańsk.
- Panoramic views: From the viewing platform of the Crane, there is a beautiful view of the Motława, Long Embankment, and other attractions in Gdańsk. It is an excellent place to take souvenir photos.
- Interactive exhibitions: The Crane Museum also offers interactive exhibitions that allow you to travel back in time and feel the atmosphere of the old port.
The Crane – the beginning of your adventure in Gdańsk
